Founded in 1888, New Mexico State University is the state's land-grant institution providing many educational opportunities through its statewide presence. The total enrollment for the main campus and four branch campuses in the fall of 2007 was 28,821 with 16,726 students at the Las Cruces campus. The total faculty numbers 1,788, with more than 84 percent of the full-time faculty holding doctoral degrees. The faculty-to-student ratio is 1:19. Programs offered include 81 bachelor's degrees, 50 master's degrees, 20 doctoral degrees, and two specialists in education programs.

NMSU contributes immeasurably to the Las Cruces area's arts and recreational offerings.  NMSU is an integral part of our community's educational, cultural and economic fabric.

Las Cruces is proud to be able to take advantage of the University's library, museums, art galleries, asymphony and other musical ensembles, professional theater, national performers, PBS, NPR campus stations, and a full 6-sport WAC athletics program. The University Art Gallery is the largest contemporary art gallery in south central New Mexico. The UAG presents 8-10 exhibitions annually of contemporary and historical art. The UAG permanent collection of over 2,600 objects includes prints, photographs and over 1,700 Mexican retablos. University Museum  New Mexico University Museum has provided forty-eight years of service to the university and the community.  Through its care and maintenance of ethnographic, historic and prehistoric objects it preserves an important part of Southwestern and Border region culture and history. Hershel Zohn Theater Theatre Arts come alive in the 377 seat capacity Hershel Zohn Theatre. American Southwest Theatre Company
The Company puts on polished professional performances between September and May, including Shakespeare, musical theater and dramas. It is located on the New Mexico State University campus. Call for show times.  505-646-4515.

Dona Ana Lyric Opera
The opera presents four shows a year, including a Broadway musical using high school students in the summer. There are two traditional operas performed each fall, spring and summer, using New Mexico State University students and visiting professionals. The band performs six concerts a year between October and May. Call for times.

New Mexico State University Choral Department 
The choral department puts on concerts and recitals throughout the year at the University's Music Recital Hall located on the NMSU campus. Call for show times. (575) 646-1306. 

New Mexico State University Concert Choir 

The NMSU Concert Choir is a cross section of NMSU students with various musical backgrounds. They perform in at least one concert per semester. (575) 646-1895. 


Performing Arts of a different type can be found on the campus in two different style venues both of which are used for live performances of all types.

Our final topic about the University affecting our lifestle in Las Cruces is SPORTS. Some will say this is the most important thing that the University provides. The two venues - Aggie Memorial Stadium is the home of Aggie Football and the Pan American Center is the home of Mens and Womens Basketball and Womens Volleyball.  Many Las Crucens plan their activities around these athletic schedules.
